South Africa has a well earned reputation as one of the countries offering some of the world's highest standards of education.

Nelson Mandela Bay, in particular, is home to a number of education and training facilities, including universities, universities of technology, colleges, private colleges as well as government and private schools which provide education services to both local and international communities.

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is the city's central hub of education. The institution, was formed on 1 January 2005, as a result of a merger between the former PE Technikon, the University of Port Elizabeth and the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University, which came about as a result of government's countrywide restructuring of higher education - intended to deliver a more equitable and efficient system to meet the needs of South Africa in the 21st century.

NMMU brings together the best traditions of technikon and university education, and draws on more than a century of quality higher education, in a new kind of university that offers a wide range of academic, professional and technological programmes at varying entrance and exit levels.

With over 20 000 students and approximately 2 000 staff members, NMMU is based on seven campuses or delivery sites within the Nelson Mandela Metropole and George (Southern Cape). NMMU offers a wide variety of courses from diplomas to PhD's in seven faculties on eight campuses.

The Damelin Education Group, incorporating Damelin, Allenby Campus, City Varsity and Camelot International, is a private education institution and offers relevant training programmes, including a wide range of internationally recognized tertiary qualifications as well as practical training. The college has campuses throughout South Africa.

Nelson Mandela Bay is one of the most desirable, affordable and safest cities in the world. The cost of living and tuition fees are considerably lower, and living costs for international students are well below those of other institutions in other cities.

The city offers a unique learning environment that nurtures creativity and provides access to unrivalled academic resources. All of its institutions also host academic, social and sport clubs and associations, focusing on the development of cultural and artistic expression.

Some of the institutions also offer business and conferencing facilities of a very high standard.
