The Penguin Plod 5km Fun Run

The Penguin Plod 5km Fun Run Starts at 09:30 and is to be run over a picturesque course at Cape Recife. Start and Finish at SAMREC and medals to all finishers. 

SAMREC is one of the partners in the Cape Recife Conservancy, which also includes Pine Lodge and The Island Restaurant, the NMMU, Summerstrand Hotel, Humewood Golf Club, the NMBM, Transnet and Noordhoek Ski-boat Club. Together we have ensured that people can safely enjoy the beauty of Cape Recife.

Fun Run day is Wednesday, 24 September, 2014

  • Preregistration must be done by 12:00 on Monday, 22 September. Entries can be handed in at SAMREC, or the entry form can be e-mailed to info@samrec.org.za with proof of payment. Banking details are:

  • Late registration is from 08h00 on Wednesday, 24 September, at SAMREC.
  • Tags will be provided to all registered fun-runners from 08:00 on Race Day, and must be pinned to the front of the runner’s shirt.
  • All entrants must be 9 years of age or older on race day, or be accompanied by an adult.
  • The fun run starts at 09:30 at the end of the parking area at SAMREC. The route follows the Cape Recife road to the lighthouse, then onto the beach around the lighthouse, and returns along the beach. The finish is on the beach below the boardwalk to SAMREC (see route map).
  • Prams and wheelchair participants will be able to proceed to the lighthouse, and then return along the same route – this distance is about 4 km.
  • No dogs – or any pets – are allowed in the Cape Recife Nature Reserve.
  • Strict security measures will be in place along the whole Penguin Plod course.
  • Low tide on 24 September will be at 09:34, with high tide at 15:45. This means that there should be relatively hard sand on the beach, but appropriate footwear should be worn.
  • Water stations will be provided along the route at 2 km and 3km. At the end each runner will be provided with a refreshing drink.
  • The cut-off time for the fun run is 10:50.
  • On finishing the fun run, the tag must be exchanged for a medal.
  • Medals will be awarded to all finishers on the following basis:

Gold medals to first 5 men and first 5 women

Silver medals to the next 90 fun-runners

Bronze medals to all other finishers.

  • The fun-run committee reserves the right to accept or reject any entry. Entry fees are non-refundable.
  • There will be lucky draw prizes at 11:00 in front of SAMREC. Attendance prizes only.
  • Fun-runners indemnify the NMBM, Sponsors and Organisers against all or any actions of whatever nature arising out of participation in this event.
  • Marshals must be obeyed at all times.
  • Food and beverages will be available at the finish.
  • Tours of SAMREC will be available at  11:30 and 12:00 to all medal holders, with a maximum of 50 guests per tour on a first-come first-served basis.

Refuse Bins will be put up beyond the water points.

Please discard used water sachets into or near these bins.

    5 km Fun Run (under 12 years)    R 20,00

    5 km Fun Run (over 12 years)   R 30,00

     Late entry fee    R 10,00

   Voluntary donation to SAMREC will be appreciated.
