FUN WALK FOR DIABETES AWARENESS THIS SATURDAY

It's hoped that hundreds of people will support this Saturday's Refreshhh Global Diabetes Walk at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

The Refreshhh Sugar Free Global Diabetes Walk takes place this Saturday morning at Lakeside, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium starting at 9am and is open to the public.

A fun untimed 5km walk around the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and Lake precinct is an annual event hosted around the world to highlight the international fight for Diabetes awareness. Diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels that result from defects in insulin secretion, or its action, or both. Normally our blood glucose levels are tightly controlled by insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin lowers the blood glucose level. When the blood glucose elevates (for example, after eating food), insulin is released from the pancreas to normalize the glucose level by promoting the uptake of glucose into body cells. In those with diabetes, the absence of insufficient production of or lack of response to insulin causes hyperglycemia.

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition, meaning that although it can be controlled, it lasts a lifetime. Over time Diabetes can lead to blindness, kidney failure, nerve damage and over time is the primary cause of strokes, coronary heart disease, and other large blood vessel diseases.

Online registration (www.zsports.co.za/GlobalWalk) is just R50 and R10 for pets on a leash. Medals and a 2 litre Refreshhh Sugar Free drink are given to all finishers. Walk starts at 9am on Lakeside and concludes at 10.30am with a host of lucky draw prizes.
