European Restaurant
European, East meets West –a food adventure!
Having heard that well known restauranteur, Theo Castelein, had started a new venture in the popular Richmond Hill precinct called Divino, I added a visit to his new eatery to my to-do list and I’m very pleased that I did.
Situated at 26 Raleigh Street, Divino is a neat, compact restaurant with plenty of character. Diners can eat el fresco on the veranda or in the courtyard or, for the cooler evenings, in the snug indoors.
I chose one of the indoor tables, as the evening was a bit chilly, opened a beer and read the menu. The first thing I noticed is that it is complex and intriguing, the result of having a chef from Serbia as well as a locally- born chef coming together to create European-styled food for the South African palette.
I asked my attentive waiter what was good and he recommended the Fillet Avocado or the Seafood Pasta, but he also suggested I try the Lamb Shawarma from the lunch menu – which he promptly placed in my hands.
Divino’s lunch time menu is a less expensive and the meals are lighter - chicken schnitzel, beef kebabs, flatbreads, shawarmas and salads, in the R35 to R75 price range.
In the end, I chose the Trinchado, because the menu said that it came with flat bread to mop up the sauce – my kind of meal.
I chatted to Theo after my order was placed and was given a complimentary flatbread with feta, instead of the traditional bread rolls or sliced bread, to snack on while I waited.
My Trinchado was superb. Beautiful fillet steak in a red wine, olive, tomato and chilli sauce served on a bed of thick potato slices. I mopped up every last drop!
Not quite replete, I chose the pan fried carrot cake with their exclusive coconut gelato for dessert. Oh my goodness!
Divino is not yet licensed but will be soon, so don’t forget to take your own. They do, however, have an espresso coffee machine and cater for vegetarian and banting diners. There’s plenty of comfortable seating outdoors for smokers. Expect to pay about R230 for a meal for two.
This is a fun restaurant and I can see myself sitting on the veranda this summer with my mates. See you there.
