FESTIVE CONCERT
On Tuesday 4th of June our FESTIVE CONCERT will take place in the Feather Market when we celebrate the 20th birthday of the organ. The Feather Market organ was inaugurated on the 4th of June 1999 by Prof Wim Viljoen and two days later on 6th June in a symphony concert with the East Cape Philharmonic, conducted by the late Chris Dowdeswell. In the 20 years of its existence the organ was used in no fewer than 177 recitals, and also in many choral events, school concerts and symphony concerts with the orchestra.
Tim Lees is well-known in Port Elizabeth. From 2009 he was Organist and Director of Music at St. Mary’s Cathedral for a number of years. During this time he was also the Vice-Chairman of the Feather Market Organ Society and presented various recitals in the Feather Market and St. Mary’s. He subsequently returned to England but regularly visits Port Elizabeth. On our invitation he will play the Festive Recital on June 4th.
Tim will present a lovely programme which includes well-known works by Schumann, Gossec, Rameau, William Walton and Tchaikovsky. The always popular Sortie by Lefebury-Wely and the Bach-Vivaldi Concerto in A minor will also be heard and Tim will conclude his recital with the first and last movements from Widor’s much loved 5th Organ Symphony. Everyone adores that famous Toccata!
You cannot miss this! And bring your friends along.
NB 1: The recital starts at 18:00 and you are requested to come early so that we can enjoy a glass of sherry/juice in the foyer before the concert and get in a festive mood to celebrate the organ’s 20th anniversary.
NB 2: We also invite everyone to join us in the foyer after the concert for a mayoral civic reception with lots of wine, juice and snacks! Please don’t rush home.
See you on 4th June from about 17:15 for sherry and juice, followed by the concert at 18:00 and the Mayoral Reception afterwards!
