NELSON MANDELA BAY TOURISM SHARES HERITAGE DAY CELEBRATION

Miriam Maulana and Louise Liebenberg soon discovered that visiting the Cuyler Manor Museum includes fun interactions whilst hearing about the 200 year old history.

In celebration of Heritage Day on Saturday, 24^th September, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism hosted a group of influencers to explore the cities heritage offerings. The tour departed from The Donkin Reserve which is also part of the iconic Route 67.

This was followed by the first stop in Uitenhage at the Cuyler Manor Museum where the group was introduced to the 200 year old stories told by long time employee Rosie. A visit to the area is not complete without a taste of Rosie’s world renowned roosterkoek and tea.

Nelson Mandela Bay has a rich cultural heritage that can be experienced through different cuisines such as the Tshisa Nyama from Dopparros in Kwazakhele which was the next stop for the group’s heritage day celebration tour. From roosterkoek to traditional chakalaka, pap and meat; different traditions and cultures were shared and explored in the heart of the township.

The Donkin Heritage Trail is one of the best ways to explore the heritage and history of the area. The trail links 51 places of historical interest and boasts some of the finest architectural attractions in South Africa, including the Campanile which was erected to commemorate the landing of the 1820 Settlers, the City Hall which was built between 1858 and 1862, as well as the Donkin Reserve and Lighthouse building.

Route 67 consists of 67 Public Art Works symbolising Nelson Mandela's 67 years of work dedicated to the Freedom of South Africa and includes 67 steps leading up the second largest flag in Africa. The artworks were designed by local artists from the Eastern Cape. The route is proud celebration of our cities heritage and history. This is a must see stop for the whole family to walk and to enjoy. Guided Tours of Route 67 are available at the Donkin Visitor Information Office inside the lighthouse building.

The Red Location Museum is a must to include on a heritage tour itinerary. It is one of only two museums in the country specialising in apartheid history (the other is the Apartheid Museum near Soweto, Johannesburg) and it's the only museum in South Africa which houses an internal mausoleum. Visitors should see the Red Location Museum as an extension of daily life in an extraordinary township, so stay a while and take advantage of a local tour and the cultural encounter of a lifetime in the company of the residents of New Brighton.
