PENGUIN FAIR 8 OCTOBER 2016

SAMREC (the South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre) is hosting a Penguin Fair on Saturday 8th October to celebrate International African Penguin Awareness Day. With this fun day out for families they are hoping to raise funds for their critical work in rescuing and rehabilitating sick and injured seabirds, particularly the endangered African Penguin.

As a non-profit, SAMREC relies on volunteers and donations to keep fish and medical supplies stocked up for these birds, and after the recent oil spill in Algoa Bay this event has even more significance. It will be a way to raise awareness of the issues these endangered birds are facing and the work SAMREC are doing to help them. Without rehabilitation centres along our coastline such as SAMREC we would lose a further 17% of the African penguin population per year. SAMREC is also importantly located close to St Croix Island which is home to the largest breeding colony of these birds in the world. There are currently 22,000 penguins on this island, though we have sadly lost 70% of this population due to over-fishing.

During the Penguin Fair there will be a penguin release, reptile show, face painting, guided tours of the centre, food and market stalls, and a raffle with fabulous prizes to be won.
