A Night at the Opera

Port Elizabeth has a wealth of amazing talent as the public experienced during the recent G&S production of All Shook Up which left audiences raving. Now P.E.’s most active and prestigious community theatre company is offering theatregoers and music lovers a new and spectacular production to close out the year, A Night at the Opera.

Liske Potgieter made her G&S debut as a stunning Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance, followed up by memorable performances in 2014’s Valentine’s Cabaret and Page to Stage. She is shining star on the local music scene and proudly represented her home town as a finalist in both the Mimi Coertse and UNISA Scholarship Competitions. She holds a Masters Degree in Music (Performing Arts) from NMMU and is currently teaching at Victoria Park High where she made her stage debut as a student. Her passion is bringing opera to a new generation by making it relevant and exciting and many of her students are featured in A Night at the Opera including Lesedi Molelbeli, Lara Potgieter, Caleb Smit, Anel Young and Lindelwa Dumakude.

Joining this talented group will be guest artist Richard Campbell with his hilarious rendition of the Major General’s Song, rising star Gemma Barnard, the wonderful Kasvia von Memerty and Khuselo Gqiba who amazed audiences in his stage debut in Page 2 Stage earlier this year.

The musical selection covers many popular arias and more modern pieces and you’ll be amazed at just how many of these great songs you can hum along to! Featured operas include Carmen, Madame Butterfly and La Traviata plus much loved pieces such as Nessun Dorma and La Donna e Mobile. Musical theatre is well represented by songs from Phantom of the Opera and Porgy and Bess and the full cast presents the worldwide hit, Time to say Goodbye.

A Night at the Opera runs for two nights only on the 29th and 30th October from 7.30pm at the Savoy Theatre. Tickets are available from Rose Cowpar at just R100 or R700 for a table of 8.
