Akkoord gaan die nuwe jaar in met Andre Swiegers. 6de Januarie 2012 by The Music Kitchen, 69 Mangoldstraat, Newtonpark. 19:30. Kaartjies is beskikbaar teen R75 pp by Hellen by Westway Kafee. 041 365 0217. Meer info oor Andre: 'South African singer-songwriter André Swiegers was born on Valentine’s Day 1958. He grew up listening to the then popular LM-Radio Hit parade. Hearing bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys inspired his lifelong passion for music. He bought his first guitar in 1974 for a mere R17.50 and soon learnt chords and began to write songs in English. André did a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology and Biblical Studies in 1977 instead. His final exams had to be postponed in 1979 as he was invited to play the leading role opposite Sonja Heroldt in the acclaimed film “Sing vir die Harlekyn.” It was during this production that he befriended Anton Goosen (Afrikaans folk-rocker), who wrote most of the music for this film. André eventually completed his final exams and received his degree in 1980. He set up his own business, Incredible Signs. At the same time he made his debut with his first “professional” gig at the Station Hotel in Brakpan. He was paid the princely sum of R10 (Ten Rand) for his first performance. As André’s daytime career grew, his evening musical performances became more frequent. He got married in 1985 and moved to Pretoria two years later where he still lives today. He has two sons from that marriage. After a suggestion from a friend to write and sing more in Afrikaans, André wrote the song “Blou”. Laurika Rauch originally recorded this song in 1990. (Twelve years later André and Réana Nel re-recorded this as a duet. "Blou" has also been translated into French ("Tout Bleu") and recorded by Maud Myra (CD: Afri-Frans / 2009). At the end of 1992, André stopped performing, but continued writing music. During 1994, André - AKA Squire Blue (comedian, Casper de Vries, helped choose this name) recorded his English album "Tablature" and later re-launched the album as “Squire Blue” - using his real name as the artist. Arnold Coleske and Harold Schenk were André’s co-producers. The Coleske brothers later approached André for help with writing lyrics for their new album. A few years later the song co-written by Andre, “Take Me where the Sun is Shining” arrived in Europe. It reached the top of the Hit Parade in various countries. During the late nineties, SAMRO rated this song as one of the twelve biggest South African hits of the past forty years. When his marriage broke up in 1998 and he closed his sign business and turned his attention to becoming a full-time musician again. The Swiegers/Coleske Composition “Aphrodite” (as sung by Coleske) was rated by SAMA (South African Music Awards) as one of South Africa’s Top Ten Songs of 2001. André has never been entered for the South African Music awards (SAMA), but his album “Sirkels van Tyd” was entered for the SABC 2 GMT-Awards (2005), which landed him two awards: Best Adult Contemporary Album; Best Producer of an Afrikaans Album. Up to date, he's written songs that have appeared on more than 1,000,000 albums.
