15 April 2014 - 15 April 2014

artEC cultural evenings, came about from an idea of creating a vibrant culture within artEC as the community arts centre. ArtEC hosts Exhibition openings every two weeks on a Tuesday night. The exhibition would run for two weeks and the Tuesdays in between when the exhibition is still running are used for these cultural evenings where art films and documentaries are shown, now we have introduced performance arts element to the cultural Tuesday as it is our vision to be a hub and a home for all artists that seek to grow and engage with an audience and the entire arts community by giving them a platform to showcase their craft, be it visual or performance art or craft. ArtEC seeks to bring in diversity in terms of different art forms, as we are known for visual arts and crafts, this way we are integrating performance artists within our community arts centre assuring them that our institution is their home too. With the success of these sessions last year, we featured some of the very well-known Bay artists, PoeticSoul who’s an award winning poet, and Phumlani Mtiti a South African Music Award winner for adult contemporary Jazz. This year we are featuring two different artsts from different music genres. Nirvana a traditional indian band and a very well known jazz vocalist Asanda Mqiki.

Asanda Mqiki is a jazz vocalist, voice lecturer.song writer and music director. Asanda Mqiki is a versatile vocalist who is determined to set world stages on fire.
With a background in contemporary music and jazz, and her good humor for good taste . Asanda has in her short career wowed audiences in different parts of the country.
Among her list of memorable performances she includes sharing the stage with the likes of Sibongile Khumalo, The Soil, Putuma,Berita, Khaya Mahlangu and many more.
Being on the Joy Of Jazz stage as a lead vocalist of her former band Take Note jazz band in 2011 served to show Asanda just how much of a command she had with her gift.
A versatile performing artist, Asanda is not shy to involve herself with other art forms i.e Theatre.
Her skill is not only in singing but in directing and creating music, and guiding other vocalist in tapping into their inner voices.

Nirvana was formed in 1987 by a group of musicians playing mainly traditional Indian for various cultural functions in and around the Nelson Mandela Metro.
The aim was to create an awareness of traditional Indian music by performing classical and light classical music to a wide audience. Nirvana still performs as a smaller group giving performances at various at private and formal functions, a highlight being the opening of the Metro council in Jan in 2004, playing at the Fire Klub, PE Folk Club, Music Kitchen, as well as the freedom day celebrations at the centenary in April 2003.
These two artists will do a 30 minutes set each and are then challenged to do a 15 minutes collaboration set to fuse their genres together and unleash a new and fresh sound.
