Book Launch GAU-TRAINED
After relocting to Johannesburg seven years ago, Flow Wellington (known to some as Selome Payne) brings her second collection to her hometown, Port Elizabeth.
In Gau-Trained, poems and stories, Flow takes readers on a relatively unexplored journey through the underbelly of the fabled City of Gold. The book puts a spotlight on what most migrants (and immigrants) experience when relocating to Johannesburg, and highlights the grit and glitz that accompanies such a move.
Gau-Trained is Flow’s retrospective look at the past seven years living in Jo’burg, touching on personal and observed experiences. More importantly, this book looks at key elements of what it takes for women to survive the big city, candidly exposing abuse, xenophobia, loss, family, racism and more.
The collection is intended to act as a guide for anyone contemplating the big trek to seek their success and fortune in Johannesburg. Flow explains, “I wasn’t warned or given any tips of survival before I came to Jozi. This place is not exactly all that the glamorous advertisements would want you to believe, especially when you don’t have a solid plan or support structure.” In the four chapters of the book: Platform, Derailed, Crossroads and Full Steam Ahead, Flow talks openly about how an “outsider’s travels do not go smoothly” (from Borders: Gau-Trained, 2018).
Books will be on sale at R120 each.
