As Africa’s premier sprint triathlon competition, which incorporates three disciplines, namely swimming (600m), cycling (20km) and running (5km), it offers competitors a multi-faceted sporting experience and a superb way to get fit, and have fun all at the same time.
The series comprises seven races, starting on Sunday and finishing early in December, and are held at fantastic venues across the country. It is not only accessible to the majority of enthusiasts but, because of the stage distances, is within the capabilities of those folk considering a sporting challenge with a difference or a foray into the exhilarating world of multi-sports.
“The main aim of the series remains to develop the sport amongst the community at large however South Africa’s top professional triathletes and a host of international tri stars annually compete in the series for substantial prize money and this year there is nearly R200 000 up for grabs,” says Greg Reis, CEO, BSG (Africa), one of the title sponsors of the series.
With a kiddies race section (distances are shorter than the adult division) added to the series in 2007, BSG Energade Triathlon Series race days have turned into an ideal family day out. The entire household is now able to participate and support each other as the Kids Series races usually start at 7.30am, followed by the senior race which gets underway at 9.30am.
As participants in either the kids section (up to the age of 15) or senior division can compete as individuals or in teams in their category, literally anyone can participate in the series whether they are five or 75.
Testament to this is that through an initiative of the sponsors and Triathlon SA, children and adults from previously disadvantaged areas competed in the 2009 series even though some couldn’t swim or did not have bicycles. These individuals were teamed with elite athletes to swim on their behalf or with friends who did have equipment, enabling the development of the sport at grass roots level.
