EXHIBITION: Survivors
“2014 is significant for its anniversaries of the Great War and the Invasion of Europe. I knew old men who had survived the trenches and not-so-old ones who had survived the Japanese camps, the battles of the desert, plane crashes and the ultimate bathos of the survival itself. In the first of my drawings I just allowed myself a few images of these men and women - some famous and others not - and then explored the ensuing emotion that before and since those conflicts we have all of us been surviving in some way or another vicissitudes of our lives and our societies. I then allowed myself to look at all kinds of survivors, from poets to Queen Elizabeth II. I have not always named the people in identifiable images, but perhaps the viewer may be able to make some educated guesses”.
The works are all small pastels, aquarelles or charcoals on paper. Some are very meticulous and others fast and gestural.
“In a gentle way they bump up against my life as a person pushing through the 60's and deal with some old nostalgias”.
