Global Diabetes WalkRun
The Global Diabetes Walk/Run was established in 2004 by the World Diabetes Foundation. In six years the event has grown to over 300,000 people participating in 52 countries, collectively focusing on diabetes as an important public health concern. The campaign is a call for all countries to understand diabetes and to take control. The campaign calls on all South Africans to understand diabetes and take control: • For the general public, it is a call to understand the serious impact of diabetes on South Africa. To learn who is at risk, and where possible, how one can avoid or delay diabetes and its complications. This campaign urges all South Africans to understand the importance of living a healthy life style and if at risk ensuring one has a diabetes finger prick test annually. • For people with diabetes, this is a message about the importance of empowering oneself through education. • For governments, it is a call to implement effective strategies and policies for the prevention and management of diabetes to safeguard the health of our citizens with and at risk of diabetes. • For healthcare professionals, it is a call to improve knowledge so that evidence-based recommendations are put into practice. Currently, there is no cure for diabetes, but most type 2 diabetes (approx 95% of all people living with diabetes) can be prevented or delayed through healthy diet and increased physical activity. It is possible to reverse the growing diabetes epidemic; however to do nothing is not an option! Come walk with us and take a stand! Join us in Nelson Mandela Bay for the 4km fun walk/run around North End Lake.
