Artist Manfred Zylla: Exhibition and book launch In Retrospect, an exhibition spanning five decades of Manfred Zylla’s work, will be on show at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum. All members of the public are invited to attend the opening function on Wednesday 22 February 2012 at 17:30 for 18:00. Zylla was born in Germany in 1939, living as a child through the ravages of World War II and its aftermath. Resident in South Africa since 1970, he became prominent as an artist highly critical of apartheid in the 1980s. His prolific output of drawings, prints and paintings are widely acknowledged as critical to the understanding of resistance art in South Africa. Since the demise of apartheid Zylla has continued to work within a paradigm of social critique, producing works that tell of the plight of the world, and point to Zylla’s strong concern with the destiny of humanity, the future of the planet, and art as a tool for social change. At the opening function, ErdmannContemporary will be launching its book, Manfred Zylla art & resistance, compiled and written by Heidi Erdmann. This is the first comprehensive book on Manfred Zylla’s long career as an artist and includes illustrations of artworks dating from 1959 to the present. Manfred Zylla art & resistance is a collector’s edition of 100 signed copies. Each book will be sold with an accompanying two-colour woodcut. A public walkabout conducted by Zylla will take place on Thursday 23 February 2012 at 12:30. All members of the public are invited to attend. For more information, please telephone the Art Museum on 041 506 2000. The exhibition will be on show until 25 March 2012.
