Jazz Lunch Hour Concert
The Department of Music and Performing Arts is hosting a jazz lunch hour concert on Wednesday 23 March at 13h00 in the South Campus Auditorium at the Nelson Mandela University.
The band that is performing features several senior jazz students along with jazz studies lecturer and pianist/keyboard player, John Edwards. The students who will be performing include Matthew Perry on saxophone, Jared Houlie on guitar, Phile Halana on bass, and Godwin Dhliwayo and Zach Pretorius who will both be playing drumkit and occasional percussion.
These students are in their second and third year of study and this will be their first opportunity to perform in an official Music Department-hosted public jazz concert because, as a consequence of the pandemic, it has been over two years since a jazz lunch hour concert has been held at the university.
Repertoire comprises a range of jazz styles including swing, samba, South African jazz and funk. Works by artists of considerable stature will be performed, these artists include Joshua Redman, George Duke, Paul Desmond, Wayne Shorter, Paquito D'Rivera, McCoy Mrubata and Feya Faku. Entrance is free.
