Legends of Broadway
The PE Gilbert & Sullivan Society began their annual revue series 2 years ago and this year’s end of year revue will be a musical feast featuring the wonderful songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cole Porter and Jerry Herman. The show highlights some of the best known songs by these Broadway Legends as well as some lesser known but equally exciting numbers. The creative team for Legends of Broadway sees Rose Cowpar directing her first major show for G&S and Richard Campbell displaying his wizardry as Musical Director. The concept of featuring 3 composers brings together 3 very diverse “Legends” and provides a beautifully balanced show that features many well known hits as well as introducing audiences to some new material that we know you will enjoy. There is truly something for everyone in this production with featured musicals including Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Anything Goes, Kiss Me Kate, Hello Dolly, Mame and many more. The Lloyd Webber set begins with the stunning Whistle Down the Wind followed by, among others, Oh What a Circus, I Don’t Know How to Love and the rousing Light at the End of the Tunnel from Starlight Express. From the Cole Porter songbook we feature classics like Anything Goes, Night and Day and You Do Something to Me with the Judy Garland and Gene Kelly hit Be a Clown giving the audience a good laugh. Jerry Herman is well known for Mame and Hello Dolly which we highlight but we also present lesser known songs such as the beautiful I Won’t Send Roses from Mack and Mabel and Dear World, a powerful showstopper. The cast showcases some of PE’s brightest talent including Ace Magxaki, Mandisa Tiso, Reyn ffoulkes, Melissa Jantjies, Alieshea Vanderryken and Jace Bowren backed by veteran favourites Yolande and Mark Farrow. Ace, Melissa, Mark and Yolande recently wowed audiences in Oklahoma! whilst Alieshea has just hung up her ruby slippers after playing Dorothy in the Rother-Swain production of The Wizard of Oz. Jace is a member of the Centrestage Boy Band Escape which has had great success both locally and beyond. Mandisa has been a regular member of the professional High School Musical Cast in South Africa and on tour throughout South East Asia and Reyn has proven his singing and acting ability in a host of local plays, musicals and corporate events. The opening night on 28th September is already sold out as a Gala and the show runs until Saturday the 8th October with shows on Wednesday to Saturday evenings and a matinee on Saturday 1st October. Tickets are only R80 and bookings are now open at Computicket or you can book a table of 8 for just R600 by calling Rose on 072 906 1977. There will only be 9 performances so book early to avoid disappointment. Legends of Broadway promises to be a night of song, dance and great musical memories. Patrons are welcome bring along a picnic basket or snacks to enjoy during the show.
