Mandela Bay Book Fair will be held in Port Elizabeth on the 8th and 9th March, 2019. The event theme is “Maskandi Lyrics and The Songs of AmaGqirha – Relevance of South Africa’s Traditional Oral Songs to Indigenous Literatures”. The organizers hope to explore, through mbbf19, the relationship between the songs of South Africa’s black oral singers, and modern methods of creating literary texts, especially in the vernacular languages. The event is a literature festival rather than a music festival. The programme will feature amagqirha groups, poets & writers, book publishers, booksellers, playwrights, writing teachers, maskandi singers, incl. maskandi singers Lulu Maswana and Kheth’ abahle, & South Africa’s poet laurette, Prof. Wally Serote. The book fair audience are not academics, they are ordinary township people mostly.
