The Northern Arts Mandela Bay Municipality Summer Carnival, featuring more than 30 local artists and attractions, will be held at the Marock Road Sports Grounds, located in Bethelsdorp from December 17 to the 18th. This historic suburb, which started life as a missionary settlement in 1802, is undoubtedly the heart of Port Elizabeth, and has a unique and colorful history that has somehow faded throughout the years. For 2 days carnival attendees can enjoy affordable family entertainment from 10am to midnight. Amongst the carnival’s main attraction will be a spectacular fireworks display, as well as the Carols By Glow Light on Saturday 18th December. In addition to the fireworks display, the Northern Arts Mandela Bay Municipality Summer Carnival will offer traditional carnival foods and special treats only found here in Nelson Mandela Bay. There will also be plenty of activities for both youngsters and the young-at-heart. Apart from a Kiddies Corner, where the children can be entertained by Popsi the Clown or participate in one of the many games on offer, there will also be plenty of competitions where the public can try their luck and test their skills. The Northern Arts Mandela Bay Municipality Summer Carnival is a special event where music, song, joy and laughter merge, allowing the community to forget for a moment the many challenges which they currently face and allowing them to focus on the reason for the season. The intention is to provide a relaxing holiday atmosphere during the start of the festive season within a stone's throw of historic Bethelsdorp. The artist line-up will include dancers, singers and a community Choir. Every year the northern areas are flooded by holiday makers from other parts of the country, migrational workers returning home as well as countless children enjoying the school holidays. This event will offer them something unique and entertaining. Various exhibitors, community crafters, musicians, businesses, food vendors and other participants will join forces to make this event a first for the area and one of the top highlights for the Eastern Cape. The Summer Carnival will give exposure to the wealth of local talent, and will feature many successful acts and personalities from the area. The programme for Saturday features solo artists, dancers, an art and craft market, specialized food stalls, helicopter flips and a celebrity karaoke competition. On Sunday the Christmas Gospel Music Festival will commence at 14h00. Various local artists will take to the stage, entertaining the audience with uplifting music. Gates open at 10 a.m. Tickets are available at R15, and can be purchased at the carnival entrance every day. The Marock Road Sports Ground is easily accessible and is situated off Stanford Road, a stone's throw from the Cleary Park Shopping Centre. Ample on-site parking will be available. A few stalls are still available. Bookings for these stalls can be made by calling Cathy van der Merwe on 0833500676.
