OPEN DAY @ Bayworld
27 May 2012 - 27 May 2012
Every year since 1977, International Museums Day is held worldwide sometime around 18 May. This year, the museum community will celebrate the 35th anniversary of this event. More than 30,000 museums, in about 100 countries, will hold special activities on this occasion.
The theme for 2012: Museums in a changing world. New challenges, new inspirations, invites museums and their visitors to wonder about the role of museums in our society, in an era of numerous changes. The theme was developed to reflect that while museums exist to collect, interpret and safeguard humanity’s natural and cultural heritage, they also reflect the world and its transformations, challenging visitors to discover themselves through exploring objects. The event provides the opportunity for museum professionals to meet their public and alert them to the challenges museums face.
As part of the celebrations, Bayworld will also be hosting various schools within the Port Elizabeth area to visit the Museum on Wednesday 23rd May. The historian will be doing a presentation based on the theme and the education team will inform the learners on Careers in Museums.
Visitors to the Museum Complex on the free Open Day, Sunday 27th May, will enjoy a varied program including behind-the-scenes tours, dissections, meet-the-scientists, animal encounters and many other experiences.
Entrance to the Museum Complex, Sunday 27th May 2012, FREE for all ages.
