Recorder ensemble concert at Savages

The PE Music Society of Port Elizabeth is proud to host yet again a concert at Savages/ Victorian Veranda, Park Drive on Sunday, 6 August 2023, 11h00 for 11h30.

A recorder quartet consisting of Dr. Erna Cloete, Lara Potgieter, Elanie McLachlan, and Lynne Gouws will be joined by double bass fundi, Dr. Mariechen Meyer. They will entertain you with a variation of styles for an hour after which you can enjoy a light lunch and something to drink.

Amongst the five ladies, one finds a lot of expertise and qualifications like two Doctorates, three masters’ degrees and quite a few performance licentiates.

Dr Erna Cloete has been a part of the Nelson Mandela University Music Department for the past 20 years, lecturing and practically tutoring flute, recorder, and piano -specializing in the former two instruments. Furthermore, in addition to also having vast experience in teaching music at primary and secondary school level, she is a regular Unisa examiner for practical exams and has been adjudicating Eisteddfods and music competitions for many years. She obtained a doctorate in 2015.

Dr Cloete incorporates ensemble playing valuable and necessary as part of her teaching and believes that it touches the heart of a student’s musical experience. Starting the NMU Recorder Ensemble in 2021 was therefore a natural outflow of this notion. It also strives to reinstate the value, unique nature, and entertainment abilities of the recorder as an instrument.

“When music is your being and your passion, it's not considered a job but a privilege”.  That's how Lynne Gouws experiences her music career thus far. With a master’s degree in performance, Lynne has performed on various platforms as a classically trained recorder player, pianist, and singer.  As a teacher, her choirs have participated in many competitions and have won many accolades.  She is very passionate about Baroque music and the Recorder and all its beauty. She currently teaches music at Pearson High School.

Elanie McLachlan is currently pursuing her master’s degree in performance at the Nelson Mandela University.  She started playing the recorder at the age of 7 under the tutelage of Dr Erna Cloete. She completed her BMus degree (Performing Arts) cum laude in 2012 and holds Trinity Licentiate Diplomas in Performance in both recorder and piano. Elanie is passionate about teaching music and currently works at St Dominic’s Priory School, where she teaches subject music, piano, recorder, and clarinet.

Lara Potgieter is currently completing a PGCE at Nelson Mandela University, after having graduated with both her BMus and MMus degrees cum laude in 2020 and 2022 respectively. In her master’s degree she specialised in piano performance and research. She also completed an LTCL in piano in 2020 and was selected to compete in the Unisa Scholarship Competition in 2018 after receiving distinctions for grade 8 examinations in both piano and voice, at which occasion she was awarded the Du Toit van Tonder Bursary for piano. She was the recipient of the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Bursary for outstanding academic achievers and received the award as the top undergraduate in the Faculty of Humanities upon her graduation in 2020.

Mariechen Meyer (double bass) is an expert in her field and an active promoter of the double bass and music education. Since she started playing the double bass Mariechen has been fascinated by the role of the double bass as a solo and chamber instrument. This fascination has led to numerous local and international music experiences. Excited to share her knowledge, she maintains an active research profile to continuously keep learning and to help promote the double bass and the importance of music education and classical music in our community.
