Robin Auld is on tour to promote his latest album, “Fingers in my pocket,” and will perform in Port Elizabeth for one night only on Wednesday, 9 February at the Savoy Theatre. The album is an eclectic mix of blues and roots songs which was recorded in London in late 2010. It features the talents of long time collaborator and world beat drummer Barry van Zyl. Slide guitar, harmonica, African blues guitar stylings and soul vocals all feature in the fresh and vibrant sound of this award winning songwriter. Familiar to South Africans through early hits such as “All of woman,” “Love Kills” and “Baby you been good,” Auld’s music has evolved from the pop sound of his early recordings into the contemporary mix of blues, African and Celtic influences that make up his sound today. Now based in the UK he has released 12 albums, performing and recording in New York, London, Nashville and Cape Town, steadily building up his profile on the blues/roots circuit with regular trips home to South Africa to promote new albums. Robin describes the new album as “yer basic got them walkin’, credit card, institutional failure, mean women and a sore head blues again” type of album! While the lyrical themes are certainly blues-based, the African influences are never far away. There is a reggae tune and even a Cape “goema” song to pepper the mix. Performing on percussion with Robin for the Eastern Cape shows is PE boy, John Dicken. Along with songs from “Fingers in my pocket,” they will be playing acoustic versions of his SA hits in a show that will enthuse and uplift.
