SOUTH African music scene hack, Dave Chislett has seen it all – well, most of it. After close on 20 years in the music industry, the one time band manager, musician, MC, photographer, speak, poet and writer has recently put his knowledge and experience into an accessible industry text book, titled1,2,1,2: A Step By Step Guide To The South African Music Industry. The book has translated well into workshops, which Chislett is now hosting. These workshops share a broad range of information with musicians, manager and promoters alike with the view to developing skills, knowledge transfer and industry development. As such Chislett has been touring the workshops around South Africa, trying to reach as many musicians from all background in the major metropolitan areas. The workshops are cheaply priced (R20) and aimed at upping the basic level of knowledge that most new entrants into the business have at their disposal. Chislett will be conducting two workshops in Port Elizabeth in association with creative industry youth movement the n_mb city project. The first workshop will take place at music stronghold, Toni’s Place in Newton Park on Satruday, May 27, focussing on the business basics of the industry, and the second at Central club and home of the underground music scene DnE on Sunday May 28, focussing on marketing skills and tools for the music industry.
