Steelpan Ensemble Concert an NMU
The Music and Performing Arts Department at Mandela University, will be presenting a Steelpan Ensemble Concert on 26 May 2022, 19:00, South Campus Auditorium, Nelson Mandela University.
This is the second public concert that the Steelpan Ensemble will be performing as they continue to explore and experiment with the instrument. The program will feature Classical, World & Jazz repertoire. Commencing with the Classical repertoire, works by Bach, Haydn, Shostakovich and Yanni will be rendered. In the World component (consisting of varied musical styles), you will hear local items by Micasa and Lira, George Michael, Daft Punk and by Trinidadian steel band composers Lennox Jordan. The final components (Jazz: Black Oros Group) includes special guests on other instruments other than steelpan where items by Abdullah Ibrahim and Chick Corea will be played.
Sylvester Appollis, Steelpan Lecturer, arranged 'Tico tico', 'Spain' and "My Destiny ' and Siyamthanda Xotyeni for the rest of the arrangements. It is worth noting that the Nelson Mandela University is one of the first tertiary institutions to offer Steelpan as part of their practical programme. This grants many young scholars access to furthering their Steelpan Studies. The Steelpan Ensemble has four voices, namely Tenors (Lead), Double Seconds (Alto), Double Guitars (Tenor) and Bass.
