The Ability Tour

The Ability Tour aims to grow the conversation around disability, ability and inclusion in South Africa.

Comprising of two shows, Warrior on Wheels which targets children between four and 11 years old, and In the Wings which is suitable for those 12 years and older.

Warrior on Wheels (40mins)
A fantastical tale of a young boy destined for great things and even greater adventures. Helped by his guardian-mother, teacher, doctor, school friends and a forest full of fire fairies; our Warrior-Explorer must battle the dark shadow of Fear (and his ghoulish henchmen) in his journey to discover everything he was born to be.

Based on Deidre Gower’s book, this play aims to engage and enliven the imagination and encourage a more accepting society, especially for those with disabilities.

In the Wings (1 hour)
National Arts Fesitval Ovation award winner, and Naledi nominated play, this story aims to engage people with what life is like with a disability. Showing that living with a disability is not always easy, but isn’t impossible either.

In the Wings is a play about purpose; about living and negotiating the everyday stuff; it’s a play about dreams and obstacles that get in the way of the realisation of those dreams. In the Wings is a story about everyday 'stuff', about choices and ultimately about possibility.

“The thread that runs through all Chaeli Campaign programmes and events is the importance of diversity, inclusion and how society can benefit by opening eyes and ears to the lessons that can be taught by our differently-abled children.” Explains Danieyella Rodin, arts project co-ordinator for The Chaeli Campaign. “Although we are directly involved in working with children with disabilities and their families, an equally important task is to raise awareness amongst able-bodied members on the essential role that people with disabilities have to play in communities, teaching lessons that only they can teach.”
