The ANiCA Trio

The NMMU Music Department will host the ANiCA Trio on 4 April 2017, 19:30 at the Music Conservatoire, Bird Street Campus.
The trio comprises of Caleb Vaughn-Jones cello (USA), Joanna Wicherek piano (Poland), Nick Fidler viola (South Africa)

This ensemble is made up of young, active performing musicians from wildly contrasting backgrounds. The collaboration of these three musicians has resulted in robust interpretations and dramatic contrasts, covering a broad range of the emotions we encounter throughout the human experience.

This program is a bold and uncompromising tribute to emotive colours and Romantic vigor. Although most of the music in this program is Modern, the selected works are melodic and are underpinned by rich, Neo-Romantic harmonies. Although each piece is an intense journey through a very specific "stand-alone" soundscape, this program balances itself out very well, contrasting bombastic Russian flamboyance with a wholesome, meditative American work; and minimalism's striking starkness with the full-bodied depth and warmth of Brahms to tie the whole performance together.

• A. Kurbatov Trio for Viola, Cello and Piano
• G. Knorr "Aurora" for Cello and Piano
• A. Pärt. "Fratres" for Viola and Piano
• J. Brahms Trio for Clarinet (arr. Viola), Cello and Piano
