FRIDAY 27 MAY AT 13H30 FOR 14H00 – VISIT TO HOUGHAM PARK
It is several years since the Society visited this historic property, of which the Main House was reputedly built in the 1830s by 1820 Settler Hougham Hudson, who was successively the first Resident Magistrate of PE in 1828. The property now belongs to the Coega Development Corporation and the house is vacant. We shall see the main house, an outbuilding known as the ‘Egg House’ (which is thought to be the first house on the site) and the Private Cemetery of the Hudson and Crews families. There has been considerable interest in recent months from descendants of both families who are keen to see the main buildings and cemetery restored.
Members will travel by own transport out of PE on the N2 Grahamstown highway and, just after rising out of the Coega Valley with the new port on your right, assemble at the next slip road before the bridge over the N2; Richard Tomlinson in his blue Ford Focus will wait for members there before proceeding to Hougham Park (please contact Richard on his cell, 083 558 2277, before the event if you are unsure of directions). Please don’t forget to wear sensible shoes and bring refreshments, drinking water, etc.
Bookings please by Monday 23 May to Lyn Haller.- 082 302 2690
Cost: Members R20.00, Guests R30.00.
