The Pirates of Penzance

Swashbuckling fun for all the family!
The PE G&S Society kicks off their first Gilbert & Sullivan show in 26 years with a rollicking production of The Pirates of Penzance!  This hilarious romp brings a classic musical comedy to life with a modern twist.
Pirates is directed by G&S regular Rose Cowpar fresh from her critically acclaimed stint on stage in Calendar Girls, the multi-talented Richard Campbell is Musical Director and Vivienne von Memerty, last seen on stage for G&S in Evita and Fiela’s Child the Musical, makes her debut as a choreographer for the Society.
The Pirates cast brings together some G&S veterans with wonderful fresh local talent.  Jody Butler plays the dashing but bumbling Pirate King with Cuan Louw as Frederic and the stunning Liske Potgieter as Mabel.  Len Sember brings to life the bumbling Major-General and James Smith is hilarious as the Sergeant of Police.  The supporting cast includes Paul Longe as Samuel, Bronwyn Maree as Ruth and Melissa Leander, Kerry-Lee Jeffrey and Amy Palmer as the main daughters.
Pirates begins with the infamous Pirates of Penzance celebrating the 21st birthday of
young Frederic who has now completed his apprenticeship and is to become a full-fledged member of their band.  We follow his adventures all set to much loved songs such as Poor Wandering One, The Major-General’s Song and Cat Like Tread.  Frederic swears to destroy the pirates, falls in love with the feisty Mabel and helps save her bevy of sisters until he finds out he’s a leap year baby and only 5 years old and so must serve out his apprenticeship until 1940!  A royal battle ensues with maidens, a Major-general, pirates, police and general mayhem until we reach the happy ending.
The Pirates of Penzance runs at the Savoy Theatre from 23rd October to 9th November with evening shows from Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm and a special Family Matinee at 2pm on Saturday 2nd November.  Tickets are just R90 or R80 for groups of 20+ or with a voucher available from all cast members.  Tickets to the Family Matinee are just R75
