TONY COX
There have been a tiny handful of seminal guitar players to come along in the last fifty years that have forged a unique, musical identity for themselves and consequently have been
a powerful influence on others. Zimbabwean born Tony Cox is one such guitarist. Absorbing the music of his surroundings and his upbringing and using the discipline of classical technique, Cox forged a new way to approach the acoustic guitar through the prism of the land of his birth. He has won three SAMA awards for his recorded works.
Cox's current projects include teaching underprivileged children how to play the guitar and understanding the rudiments of music theory. To get this off the ground he joined forces with colleague Anthony Just and created 'Player Inspire', an organisation that advocates the free sharing of skills to those less fortunate. Cox spent a year collecting unplayed guitars from his fans for the children to use and has influenced others to start up similar projects. He is also currently compiling a book of his guitar instrumentals that will include stories that the music tells, instructions to the guitarist and some art and photographs.
THULI COX
At just fourteen years old, Thuli Cox already displays a command of her musical medium that gives her listeners goose bumps. She has appeared on stage with and without her father from the age of eleven and although currently doing her Grade 5 piano and proficient on bass guitar, she prefers to appear on stage with an acoustic guitar as a backing to her rich, soulful voice. Thuli will present a short set on her own and her dad will join her for part of her performance.
Do not miss this opportunity to see and hear a true South African icon and his young daughter in concert together. This will be a show to remember and a preview to the full show they intend bringing to the arts festival in 2020.
PRESS
'Tony and Thuli put on a festival of sounds that meshed funk and jazz, folk and rock 'n' roll-flavoured music to the absolute delight of 90-odd music lovers gathered at the intimate setting'
Stefan Goosen, Knysna Plett Herald
'Consistently brilliant'- Richard Haslop, AudioVisual
'Phenomenally talented' – What's On Cape Town
'Accomplished acoustic guitar players are everywhere these days. There’s a whole calendar of festivals dedicated to them and as they mingle and influence each other, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for one to arrive with a totally individual ‘voice’. Tony Cox, however, may just have managed this. His guitar style has as distinctive a South African tang, with added tones from his native Zimbabwe, as his accent' –
Rob adams, The Herald, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Scotland
