Traditional and modern fashions meet at Kouga Heritage Festival

Traditional and modern African clothing will be displayed at the second Kouga Heritage festival.
The festival will take place at the Kouga Cultural Centre in Humansdorp from Friday, September 26 to Sunday, September 28.
Traditional African clothing will be on show in the foyer of the Kouga Cultural Centre where the festival is to take place and the modern African fashions will be displayed and will also be available for purchase.
Some of the fashion garments on display have been made by Kouga sewing cooperatives, whose 20 members have been trained by Neliswa Menyelwa from Mpofu Home Industries through a partnership between the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform and the Kouga Municipality.
The training started with a Beginners Course last year, and continued with an advanced course this year in September.
The participants were taught how to sew, make dress patterns and other basic designing techniques that are important in the sewing industry. This was followed by workshops on pricing and how to promote their work.
The advanced course will end just before the festival where Kouga Staff members will be modelling the garments made by this group of trainees. The garments will be on display and will be for sale to the public.
The venue for the Kouga Heritage Festival is the Kouga Cultural Centre in Humansdorp, which can be found on the corner of Voortrekker road and Heugh roads.
