Whales Festival
This year we celebrate the second whale festival in Port Elizabeth. Every June, the people of Port Elizabeth come together to celebrate the arrival of the Humpback whales in Algoa Bay. These whales leave their feeding grounds in the Southern Ocean towards the end of summer and head towards the warmer waters off South and East Africa. Algoa Bay is their halfway mark on this incredible journey.
This year Raggy Charters initiated and assisted in the organizing of 17 festivals, mini festivals and presentations, all the way from Knysna to Kenya. Activities include whale spotting, latest whale research, whale displays and movies, whale art, inter tidal walks, photo exhibitions, whale floats and kiddie’s games. The idea is to educate people about these amazing animals and the environment in which they live and the need for its protection.
The emphasis is also to create awareness for marine plastic pollution. What is required globally is a drastic shift towards Zero Plastic Waste generation. This will mean the redesigning of plastic products to ensure sustainable lifestyles, the creation of a value chain for plastic products and a long awaited end to single-use plastics.
