The Zimology Institute presents Zimology Quartet at the Boardwalk Casino on Thursday 3rd March 2011. This performance is based on the exchange programme between The Zimology Institute and The University of Michigan, U.S.A. This particular performance will feature Zim Ngqawana on Woodwinds, Ellen Rowe on piano, Marion Hayden on Bass and Kevin Gibson on drums. They will also present a workshop, master classes and clinics at the Boardwalk from 12h00 noon to 16h30. Zim Ngqawana, Founder of the Zimology Institute, Composer, woodwind player and 5 times SAMA award winner. Ellen Rowe, jazz pianist and composer is The Head of Jazz Studies, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation at the University of Michigan. Ms. Rowe's compositions and arrangements have been performed and recorded by jazz ensembles and orchestras around the world, including the Village Vanguard Orchestra, BBC Jazz Orchestra, U.S. Navy Commodores, Berlin and NDR Radio Jazz Orchestras, London Symphony, DIVA, and the Perth Jazz Orchestra. Many of these works can be heard on recently released CD’s including Leave It To Diva, The Perth Jazz Orchestra, Bingo (The Bird of Paradise Orchestra) and I Believe In You (DIVA). She has recently been a composer-in-residence at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Her big band compositions are currently published by Sierra Music Publications. Marion Hayden, composer, bassist and faculty member of The University of Michigan. She is one of very few female jazz bassists. She became a professor of bass instruction in the jazz department of Tri-C College in Cleveland, OH, and was installed in the faculty at the University of Michigan School of Music. She has performed or recorded with such jazz veterans as Kirk Lightsey, Ralph Peterson, Jr., Terry Callier, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Fortune, Kenny Burrell, Steve Turre, Cecil Bridgewater, fellow Detroiter James Carter, and countless other professionals passing through. Kevin Gibson, master drummer. As a student he was a very young member of Darius Brubeck’s first South African quintet, and he has gone on to become South Africa's premier jazz drummer with an impressive discography and list of performance credentials. He became a drum professor in the late 90’s at the University of Cape Town. The workshop, master classes and clinics will be offered for free to the public and students on Thursday 3rd March 2011.
