360 Ways to view the Bay

INNOVATION is the name of the Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) game as a new virtual tour project is underway which aims to showcase, in an “innovative manner”, the diverse range of facilities and attractions on offer in the Bay.

These include tourism-related facilities and attractions, as well as those that are functional – such as hospitals, schools, and municipal buildings – and business orientated – including industry and retail.

“The growth of new media and the internet gives local and international tourists the opportunity to access all kinds of information about locations and tourist destinations before they have even set foot there,” said Titus Chuene, NMBT marketing manager. “We want to add to that experience by giving them a real sneak preview of what’s on offer in the Bay.

The municipality has contracted Greenroom to assist in achieving this objective in an innovative, user friendly and visually attractive manner – through virtual tours.

Virtual Tours provide viewers with a birds eye view of a facility or establishment from a distance creating ideal opportunities for showcasing such facilities to potential visitors to our city, who would like to come here but require certain information particularly with regard to for example accommodation prior to arrival, added Chuene.

“This is a huge value-add to our tourism services,” said the excited Chuene.

Although 360 degree virtual tours have been around for several years, the technology has improved significantly over the past year, with the result that virtual tours have become far more easily accessible and the amount of information they can impart is far more than a straightforward 360 degree spherical photograph.

Some features the virtual tours boast are:

  • User friendly and easy to use
  • 360 degree spherical images
  • Hotspots – these allow you to navigate to different areas within the pictures without the need to access any other menu
  • Additional photographs can be included
  • Digital brochure
  • Custom-made maps – including multi-levels:1st, 2nd & 3rd floors
  • Custom-designed template
  • Interactive map with compass effect – allowing visitors to visualize their orientation in relation to the tour
  • Google maps
