Algoa Bay artist promote environmental education
PLANS to have Algoa Bay declared a World Heritage Site have been given a boost by internationally acclaimed artist Konrad Geel, who has designed a sticker for Ocean Messengers.

The non-governmental organisation was established to educate people about the need to conserve the bay and to campaign for Algoa Bay – or parts of it – to be declared a World Heritage Site.

“With the waters from the World Heritage Site of the Baviaanskloof sustaining the people and economy of Nelson Mandela Bay, there is a natural link between Algoa Bay and the Eastern Cape’s only World Heritage site,” said Geel.

Geel, a Nelson Mandela Bay local who has worked around South Africa in film and design, is also one of the artists involved in the new sculptures on the Donkin Reserve. The sticker depicts a whale in the Bay calling out for support for the project.

“We need to spread this sticker and its message as far as possible. Every car driving in PE and the EC needs to have one!” says Rainer Schimpf, founder of Ocean Messengers.

Ocean Messengers has received several national and international awards for educational projects and film productions aimed at creating awareness of the richness of the marine life in Algoa Bay.

The sticker is the first in a series of projects aimed at raising awareness further and building support for the Bay to be declared a World Heritage Site.

The stickers, which cost R15, are available from Daltar Printing, corner Milner Street and Buffelsfontein Road (Tel: 041 3686651).

Proceeds from the sale will also help support the work of Ocean Messengers. More information about Ocean Messengers can be found at
