AQUABEAR SWIM CLUB GALA 2015 ANNOUNCEMENT

Calvin and Tamlyn Price with their NAIA Chanpionship awards who will be competing at the Aquabear Gala in Port Elizabeth from 3-6 October 2015

The prestigious Aquabear Gala is back and will be held at the Newton park Swimming complex over four days from the 3rd to the 6th October 2015, and Aquabear are happy to announce they will be supporting CHOC with various fund-raising activities at the gala.

Up to 600 swimmers from twenty clubs are expected to participate in what has traditionally been the biggest club swimming gala in the Eastern Cape, and in keeping with the CHOC slogan of “keeping more than hope alive”, each swimmer will be asked to enter a fictitious swimming race where the entry fees will all go to CHOC .

“We are thrilled that after two years with no suitable venue to host the gala, we are back, and are planning to make this year one to remember,” Club President Enrico Cudin says.

Aquabear Swimming club is the oldest swim club in Port Elizabeth and is also the largest swim club in The Eastern Cape with two branches in Port Elizabeth as well as club branches in Grahamstown, Graaff Reinet, Cradock and Somerset East.

Aquabear Swimming Club has produced some of the top Swimmers from the Eastern Cape over recent years, with the likes of Calvin and Tamlyn Price, both medallists at the recent NAIA National Sports Championships in the USA, having started their swimming careers with the club. Tamlyn won a bronze in 50m freestyle, silver in 100m backstroke and bronze in 200m backstroke events at NAIA while Calvin won a silver medal in the 100m breast stroke  event. Both are studying in the USA but will be home to compete in this years prestigious Aquabear Gala.  Other Aquabear swimmers competing will be Para Olympian gold medallist Kevin Paul and  international competitor Guy Wilson who set EP records at the recent FINA championships in Russia.

Unfortunately Ex Aquabear swimmer, Christopher Reid, recipient of the Nelson Mandela Aquatics “athlete of the year” award, and the  Readers Choice Home grown Hero of the year 2014 award, will not be able to participate this year as he will be returning home from the USA in April 2016 to attend the local Olympic trails for the SA Rio squad.

“We are also happy to be supporting fund-raising for CHOC at the Aquabear gala this year,” comments Cudin. “It is a worthy cause and we hope that this not only assists financially but also helps raise awareness of how many children are currently facing the battle with cancer in our own town”

“We hope that the public and all swimming clubs support our efforts in this regard and that we will see this benefit grow yearly.”
