Bay hosts Pirates and Cosmos
07 October 2011
Recently Nelson Mandela Bay hosted Orlando Pirates and Kaizer chiefs in a thrilling encounter before a vibrant local crowd. Football fever gripped the Bay and gave rise to an unprecedented passion for the game.
“Our city was filled with fun and frenzy, with soccer fans at the centre of this electric atmosphere. It’s one of those times that you feel proud to be South African and a resident of Nelson Mandela Bay. There’s something about our city that makes games unique. I think it has to do with the friendliness of Nelson Mandela Bay locals,” said Titus Chuene, marketing manager of Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT).
In the run up to the game at the stadium, a concert featuring leading DJs from around South Africa will be held. The concert is being organized by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.
“This concert will be one of the biggest in our city and will build up momentum leading up to the coming games,” said Chuene.
For Jomo Cosmos, victory in this game would be a major league upset, while Pirates will be fighting to uphold their reputation as a top flight team and favourites for the PSL title. The match will start at 3:30pm.
“Nelson Mandela Bay has proved to be a fantastic host to big sporting events. That’s a major breakthrough for our city. I would like to see another capacity crowd at the stadium and I ask residents of Nelson Mandela Bay to come and join in the football fun at our world class stadium,” said Chuene.
Kaizer chiefs will return to the Nelson Mandela stadium shortly after the Orlando Pirates and Jomo Cosmos match to play against Maritzburg United from Pietermaritzburg in Kwa-Zulu Natal, on Tuesday November 1 at 7:30pm.
