Blitzbokke in The Spotlight - Behind the Scenes of the South Africa 7’s Photo Shoot

Most of the action for the team is out in the open training fields in Stellenbosch, or in the magnificent rugby stadiums of the world. Every now and again though, the guys have to show some diversity and apply their talents off the field too – in this case it was in a studio, under bright lights, in front of photographer Rob Millers lens.

                                                                                      Not Shy

It’s safe to say Kyle Brown, Chris Dry, Steven Hunt, Seabelo Senatla and Jamba Ulengo were more than comfortable in front of the lens, and we would not be surprised to learn that one of two of the guys are moonlighting as catwalk models in the off season.

That was not information that we managed to pry from any of the players, but we did learn some interesting facts about these guys:

Chris Dry: Would choose Beat Box as his X-Factor skill. Take a girl to the beach for first date and wanted to be a crab fisherman as a youngster.

Jamba Ulengo: Debuted last season in Scotland. Gets psyched to house music when they play it in the stadium and would dance his way to success on X-Factor

Steven Hunt: Enjoyed travelling to Tokyo most of all. Acknowledges the Springbok on his chest when scoring a try. Rates Gio Aplon as the top sevens player he has seen.

Captain Kyle: Loves gadgets and would get into something techy if not a pro rugby player, wanted to be Superman just ahead of Batman as a child and, like his team mates, says Chris Dry is most likely to be the target of any pranks.

                                                                     Springboks on the Catwalk

To get into the energy of the shoot, Jamba and Seabelo embraced that world of catwalks, modelling and music by giving a strutting take on how they would go about walking down the ramp at a fashion event. Jamba was all about the dance moves, Seabelo more into the swagger.
All the while captain Kyle Brown was in charge of the music and was picking some great beats to get the guys into the spirit. ‘It’s good to do something different and a shoot like this will hopefully appeal to a new kind of fan. We appreciate all the backing we can get so it’s great fun doing something like this to create a little bit more interest for an audience that is not quite traditionally the rugby one that we are used to … perhaps something for the ladies,’ Kyle finishers with a cheeky grin.

                                                                             Never Too Far

Although the studio is a long way from the training ground and the guys are more interested in the music, magazines, muffins and make-up today than water bottles and tackling bags; the thoughts of the world series is never too far away  and they remain mindful of the challenge of the home leg of the series in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in December, ‘We are lucky to have a home leg, only 9 out of the 16 teams get to host a leg of the series,’ said Steven Hunt, ‘it’s the only time we get to play in South Africa and performing in front of  the home support is incredibly special. It’s going to be an action packed weekend and we really do hope everyone comes out to support us in Port Elizabeth.’
