Cycle Tour world of wheels descends on Bay
THE road might be meant for wheels, but on Sunday February 5, Nelson Mandela Bay is shedding its motor town image and opting for the bipedal powered push of bicycles when the country’s second oldest national cycling classic rolls into the city for the annual The Herald VW Cycle Tour.

Late last year Volkswagen Group South Africa has confirmed it would once again drive The Herald VW Cycle Tour for the seventh year running.

Speaking at the launch of the 27th edition of the event, VWSA general manager of communications Matt Gennrich said the company was once again proud to be associated with the race. “It’s a very successful and well-organised event that has stature in the cycling and wider community.”

Gennrich said there was a definite logic to the sponsorship because “cycling is a sport that has broad appeal, as do our cars.”

Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) chief executive, Mandlakazi Skefile said the event had firmly entrenched itself in the city’s heart and that it both contributed to local economic development and assisted in raising the profile of the city as a “top-notch” events destination.

“The Herald VW Cycle Tour is a signature event for Nelson Mandela Bay, we are proud to host such a prestigious event – and also each year, to see the tourism and economic benefits as thousands pour into the city.”

The tour, which takes place in Nelson Mandela Bay on February 4 and 5 this year, traditionally marks the start of the professional racing season.

In 2011, Team Bonitas’ Tyler Day and Nashua-Toyota’s Robyn de Groot won the men’s and women’s feature events on the road while Fedgroup-Itec Connect’s Brandon Stewart and Team Contego’s Ariane Kleinhans took top honours in the mountain bike events.

This year’s weekend-long festival of cycling kicks off with the mountain bike challenge in Addo on the Saturday followed by the road events in Port Elizabeth on the Sunday.

The 105km Classic, which starts and finishes at Hobie Beach opposite The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World, is known for its scenic coastal route around the “wild side” of the city.

The Herald’s chief marketing officer Justin Peel said some of the races have been rebranded and their distances adjusted to make them more accessible to the respective target groups. The supporting road events for the Classic will be the 70km Pursuit and 40km Challenge.

The Powerade-sponsored 21km Leisure Ride, 2km Kiddies’ Ride and 500m Toddlers’ Dash provide more family-friendly options, with proceeds being donated to the children’s charity Reach for a Dream.

On the mountain biking side, the 80km Extreme and 60km Adventure races have been streamlined to provide a better off-road experience, while the shortened 30km Powerade Leisure Challenge is aimed at fun riders. The Powerade-supported 5km Kiddies’ Challenge and 500m Toddlers’ Dash complete the categories.

As title sponsor of the Eastern Cape’s richest race, VWSA has contributed a substantial portion of the R100 000 winners’ prize purse. The automotive giant will also be giving away a four-door Polo Vivo 1.4 worth R123 000.

The vehicle will be the main prize in the attendance-only lucky draw at The Boardwalk Race Village. The pre-event expo and registration also take place in the marquee, which has been dubbed the “home of cycling”.

Additional prizes up for grabs include R50 000 in household appliances from Tony’s Furnishers, Appliances & Beds.

Official drinks sponsor Powerade will again keep participants hydrated while Life St George’s Hospital and GardMed will attend to any medical emergencies. Other returning sponsors include Town Lodge and Bukani Print.

UPDATE: Due to waterlogged conditions on the course, organisers of The Herald VW Cycle Tour have announced changes to Saturday's mountain bike routes. Although the races will still go ahead as scheduled, race director Brad Jackson said certain single-track sections would be cut from the 80km Extreme and 60km Adventure for safety reasons. He said they would do their best to keep as close to the original distances as possible. Updates will be posted on Twitter and Facebook. The first race gets underway at 6am from the Addo Polo Club.
