30 June 2011

The highly successful event draws visitors from all over South Africa to enjoy a “European-style” Country Christmas weekend. There is often snowfall on the Hogsback mountains during the event, which adds to the festive atmosphere.
“We focus on old-fashioned timeless fun,” said organiser, Anleen Louw. “It’s a weekend for the whole family to enjoy the Hogsback winter weather – where we focus on relaxation, fun and spending time with loved ones in front of log fires.”
Sponsored by the Amathole District Municipality and the Eastern Cape Development Corporation, the Hogsback Country Christmas in July is an intimate family affair.
“This fits in perfectly with our winter campaign theme, feel like a kid again. We at Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism are encouraging our locals and tourists from out of town to experience the flavour of youth through tourism activities in Nelson Mandela Bay and around the Eastern Cape, the province of festivals this winter,” said NMBT’s chief executive, Mandlakazi Skefile. “Hogback is an incredible winter wonderland that offers this unique country-themed festival. We want people to come through our city to experience festivals like this throughout the province.
The whole town of Hogsback is joining in the fun with a bonfire, and a fire-side performance by the well-known Ha!man (Francois Leroux )on the Friday evening. Master Crafters will be giving interactive demonstrations of their craft disciplines. Port and Muscadel tastings at the Edge will take place throughout the weekend.
Saturday, 23 July is an “African-style sleigh” – an old wagon drawn by a trained team of Nguni oxen from the University of Fort Hare – which visitors can ride on. Jazz and traditional dances will add to the festive vibe. A variety of performances and tri-nation rugby will provide festive fun for day-trippers.
There will also be craft workshops at the main craft market where guests can learn the art of decoupage and riempie and whip making. For the food lovers, there will be a bounty of good seasonal inspired meals to choose from.
For sports fanatics, a festive soccer tournament will take place featuring local soccer players. After watching some tri-nation action on Saturday, visitors can indulge in delicious high tea or pre-booked gala dinners where seasonal fare, with all the trimmings will be on offer.
Sunday, 18 July will open with an interdenominational church service in aid of the annual Hobbiton on Hogsback (proper) Christmas Camp for underprivileged children. “We will be taking a special collection to help fund this camp – its an unforgettable experience, and a special legacy for the youth of the province” says Louw.
Overnight guests at Hogsback will receive gifts and festive red hats. They are invited to share in the Country Xmas spirit by contributing towards one of the Hogsback charities.
The Hogsback Country Xmas in July is set to be one of the highlights of the year post Soccer Mania, so bring the kids and enjoy a relaxing getaway in the heart of Hogsback.
