JAZZ’AFRO SUNDAYS @ THE BARN PRESENTS NOSISI MAVELA

NOSISI MAVELA

Growing up in New Brighton Nelson Mandela Bay, Nosisi had always loved music and her passion for singing led her to become one of the members of the much loved Bantu Church Of Christ Choir and later Joy of Africa where she performed with other revered Nelson Mandela Bay golden voices such as Nomabotwe Mtimkhulu.

Alex Khuze invited Nosisi to be part of his band when she was just 15 years old and Nosisi has not looked back since! She has worked with the best of the best who have honed her stunning voice and taught her a tremendous amount about arranging, musicality and the art of performing. Nosisi treasures the years she spent performing with the late greats Stompie Mavi and Victor Ntoni.

As many before her, Nosisi left Nelson Mandela Bay searching for a record deal in the bigger cities of South Africa and has even appeared in the multi award winning films Son of Man and uKarmen eKhayelitsha.  She continued to work in Musicals and Operas starring in Latraviata and Porgy and Bess sharing the stage with vocal powerhouses Sibongile Khumalo and Sibongile Mngoma.

During her time away from the Bay, Nosisi has worked with the finest musicians that South Africa has to offer, the likes of Tsepo Tsola, Mara Louw, Joe Nina, Feya Faku, Lawrence Matshiza, McCoy Mrubata, Gloria Bosman and the legendary Abigail Kubeka.

Not a stranger to the festival scene too, Nosisi has performed at the Joy Of Jazz, Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Mamela Arts Festival to name but a few. Adding to her long list of achievements and highlights, Nosis was selected to be part of the tributes for Miriam Makeba and Victor Ntoni, invited to sing the National Anthem at the African Cup Of Nations in 2013 too!

Nosisi will be performing an array of Afro Pop; Jazz & Township as she describes her compositions and reworked versions of her favourite standards at this week’s Jazz’Afro Sundays @ The Barn sessions. Get to the Barn Theatre early this Sunday as you do not want to miss out on this special treat.
