Kings Beach upgrade set to boost leisure offerings
06 December 2011
As play gets underway all around, the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) is working on the re-development of Kings beach, one of the city’s premier beaches.
The project will see the redesign of the area into a modern urban environment with beautiful landscape architecture. Ongoing civil engineering works have seen deep excavation in preparation for the rebuilding of the beachfront esplanade.
“This is a great development that will boost our leisure offerings in the city. We hope that the residents will enjoy and appreciate these new facilities as much as international guests. Our residents have waited for this for a long time and will be please to see that it is finally happening,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism marketing manager Titus Chuene.
The beach will become “one of the jewels in the city's tourism crown” added Chuene, who commend the MBDA for its insight and planning.
“We are excited that something is finally being done. As a result of this development we are going to end up with a world-class beachfront. We are also glad that Mc Arthur baths will be open for the season,” said Dave Snuggs of Humewood Hotel.
He added that hotel bookings were looking good even though it was not to capacity.
The first phase of the project will see the re-landscaping of the park area of King's Beach. Estimated to cost about R10-million the first phase is set to be completed by the end of June next year.
In the later phases, emphasis will be on developing the landscape further and providing adequate parking space along the entire section of the southern beachfront.
