LAUNCH OF THE NEW MOHAIR INDUSTRY HQ IN PE.

With South Africa being the biggest producer of Mohair worldwide, the Mohair Industry took the lead in developing the Mohair Headquarters in the vibrant suburb of Walmer, Port Elizabeth.

Inspired by various natural elements and the story of the Angora goat; the striking new Mohair Industry Head quarters pays homage to the past, present and future of Mohair- a locally produced and luxurious fibre that has its brand firmly rooted in South Africa.

With South Africa being the biggest producer of Mohair worldwide, the Mohair Industry took the lead in developing the Mohair Headquarters in the vibrant suburb of Walmer, Port Elizabeth.  For the past four decades, Mohair South Africa has occupied a building in the old business district of Port Elizabeth, and with the launch of the international Mohair Mark in 2015; a mark that distinguishes Mohair products from other fibres, the Mohair Industry had to make the move to ensure their office space reflected the innovative and vibrant brand that the world has come to recognise. With the majority of South African Mohair being exported, Mohair South Africa has a vast international footprint, with guests visiting the province on a regular basis. Visitors include fashion decision makers, influential media as well as buyers. The new sensitively designed building by Jason Erlank Architects respects the environment and its surroundings, bringing the magnificent Karoo into the heart of the friendly city.

The inspiration behind the building was to recreate a farm shed and bring the rural story of Mohair to life in a contemporary way.  Natural materials such as polished concrete and broad plank timber flooring, together with off shutter concrete were combined to create elegant but simple interior spaces. Balustrades designed with mild steel and timber handrails ensured every element of the building was in line with the simple style and concept. Other components include bagged brick, charcoal sheeting and vertical cladding. Turkish tiles were also included to pay tribute to the origins of the Angora goat.

The building is also home to a Mohair research library, a conference facility, a crafting space as well as a retail store that stocks the best of international and local Mohair designs. The store officially opens its doors on the 22nd of March and customers can browse or buy from 8am to 4:30pm on weekdays. An array of products will be available from 20 different manufacturers including socks, jerseys, blankets, yarns, homeware and designer dresses
