Ma Tshwete loves ‘Madiba Bay’
SHOPPING trips, meeting old friends and reliving a vibrant past are all reasons why Pam Tshwete, member of parliament and wife of the late government minister Steve Tshwete, loves Nelson Mandela Bay.

“But the main reason I love Nelson Mandela Bay is because it is the cleanest, neatest city in the whole country,” said Tshwete, an ANC MP. “When I compare this city to others around the country, it’s without equal.

“The streets are all spotless, people look after their houses, there are plants and trees everywhere – and even though it’s windy – it’s the cleanest city in South Africa.”

Tshwete – who lives in King Williams Town and Cape Town says that coming to Nelson Mandela Bay is relaxing because of its cleanliness and great views.

“The other important thing for us to remember about Nelson Mandela Bay, the city that was chosen to carry our great former president’s name, is that it is the final resting place of many of the comrades who struggled so long and hard for freedom,” said Tshwete.

“Raymond Mhlaba, Govan Mbeki, the PEBCO three, and many more – I love coming here because of the history and the success Nelson Mandela Bay is making of the city.”

Tshwete, who is a member of the parliamentary portfolio committee on social development, was commenting on which standout feature – physical or emotional – should be the next icon of Nelson Mandela Bay.

She is participating in Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism’s (NMBT) three month icon campaign and “I love NMB” competition.
The campaign focuses on the local market this month and then will expand nationally and provincially as the summer season nears, said NMBT officials.
