National Science Week at Bayworld

In the true spirit of Science, the Port Elizabeth Museum at Bayworld is hosting an exciting exhibition to celebrate National Science week. The exhibit, entitled “Shark World” is the brainchild of shark expert Dr Matt Dicken, who is a Research Associate at Bayworld. The exhibit has been showcased at various venues throughout South Africa and has won a prize for the “best exhibit” for the last 2-years running at SciFest Africa, South Africa’s premier science event.

Shark world is an interactive exhibit focusing on the oceans top apex predators – sharks. The centrepiece of the exhibit features a robotic 3.5 m great white shark, affectionately known as “nibbles”, with movable jaws, gills and tail. A peel away section of the shark reveals its internal anatomy. The exhibit also features real shark body parts such as eyes, teeth and skin, which people can touch and feel, as well as a listening booth in which people can listen to underwater sounds. An exciting addition to the exhibit are life size jaws of megalodon”, the world’s largest pre-historic meat eating shark, which people can walk through.

The exhibition, which is intended to dispel some of the myths surrounding sharks and portray their critical role in the ocean environment, can be viewed at Bayworld from the 2nd to the 8th August in the Marine Hall of the Museum. Facilitators will be on hand daily from 9h00 to 16h30.
