Nelson Mandela Bay is the place for national chess in 2011

Nelson Mandela Bay will undoubtedly be the place of interest when it comes to the hosting of major chess events this year.  

South African Masters and South African Ladies Open From April 27 until May 2 the South African Masters and South African Ladies Open will attract the cream of the crop of chess to the Diaz Club in Newton Park (Nelson Mandela Bay).

South African Junior Chess Championship (SAJCC) However, before the top brass of this inspirational game in the country hit the streets of Port Elizabeth, young chess players from six (6) to nineteen (19) years of age will get a chance on April 2 at the Kwezi Lomso Secondary School, Zwide to compete for a place in Eastern Province Development teams.

These teams will compete at the South African Junior Chess Championships that will also be hosted on Nelson Mandela Bay soil in December.

According to Mr Winston Dalpat, Development Officer of the Eastern Province Chess Association, they are encouraging children from the age of six to nineteen years to participate in these trials in order for us to select the development teams to represent EP at the SAJCC.

“Hopefully the local media will also assist us by spreading the message of the trails for next Saturday to all corners of Nelson Mandela Bay in order for us to select formidable teams that can represent us,”
he added.
