Nelson Mandela Bay Positions Itself as a Film and Sports Destination Through Integrated Showcase at NMB Stadium

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is set to advance its destination marketing and sector development objectives through a strategically integrated film and sporting event at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on 6 June 2026. The initiative, delivered in partnership with the Mandela Bay Development Agency and key industry stakeholders, combines the relaunch of the Nelson Mandela Bay Film Office with an international boxing tournament to showcase the city’s capacity as a host destination for major events and creative industries.

The relaunch of the Film Office represents a critical intervention in strengthening the city’s film value chain and positioning Nelson Mandela Bay as a competitive filming destination within South Africa. Through a structured programme of industry workshops, stakeholder engagement and local film screenings, the initiative seeks to stimulate production activity, support emerging talent and re-establish institutional support mechanisms for the sector. This aligns with broader objectives to attract inward investment, facilitate location-based filming and enhance the city’s visibility within national and international film networks.

The inclusion of an international boxing tournament within the same programme reflects a deliberate effort to leverage sports events as a catalyst for destination profiling and visitor attraction. Organised by Zantsi Boxing Promotions, the tournament will feature international bouts alongside a South African title defence, contributing to the city’s positioning as a viable host for high-profile sporting events. The integration of sport and film within a single platform demonstrates a cross-sector approach to event programming, maximising audience reach and economic impact.

Beyond the primary components, the event incorporates cultural performances, local food offerings and family-oriented activities, reinforcing the role of events in supporting the broader tourism and informal economy. This layered programming approach enhances dwell time, diversifies visitor experiences and creates opportunities for small business participation within the events ecosystem.

From a destination development perspective, the event underscores the strategic use of municipal assets such as the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to drive activation and economic activity. It further highlights the importance of coordinated partnerships between the Municipality, its development agencies and private sector stakeholders in delivering integrated initiatives that contribute to both sector growth and destination branding.

Executive Mayor Councillor Babalwa Lobishe emphasised that the relaunch of the Film Office marks a renewed commitment to supporting the creative industries while leveraging existing infrastructure and partnerships to stimulate economic development. The combined focus on sport and film is intended to build on the city’s existing strengths while unlocking new opportunities for growth, investment and job creation.

Overall, the initiative signals a shift towards more intentional, multi-sector event programming as a tool for destination positioning. By aligning film development, sports tourism and cultural activation within a single platform, Nelson Mandela Bay continues to strengthen its profile as a dynamic, opportunity-driven destination capable of hosting diverse, high-impact events.
