Blue Flag status has been awarded to three beaches in Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) for the Blue Flag season of 2015/2016 in Hermanus on the 6 October 2015.

Humewood, Hobie and Kings Beach will be boasting the internationally recognised accreditation just in time for the summer season. South Africa was the first country outside of Europe to be awarded with a Blue Flag status for its beaches 15 years ago.  Humewood Beach was one of the first two beaches awarded this accreditation and has retained this status for the full 15 years thus far.

Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism Chief Executive Officer, Ms Mandlakazi Skefile shares, “We are extremely proud of Nelson Mandela Bay as this achievement of excellence will assist us to market the destination and the coastal offerings with an internationally recognised accreditation.”

“The Blue Flag status affords all beach goers locally and from abroad the assurance that best principles are practised in our destination and their safety and well being is of our concern” confirms Ms Skefile further more.

The Blue Flag accreditation assures locals and visitors that the beaches are clean, safe and environmentally friendly as per the standards implemented and inspected by WESSA. The award also assists to educate communities about the importance of our coastlines and the care needed for their sustainability.

Ms Skefile, CEO of NMBT confirms, “We can proudly say that our beaches in Nelson Mandela Bay are sustaining excellence in beach management and we are ready to welcome travellers from around the globe to enjoy all festivities this summer season.”
