OCEAN RACING SERIES THIS SUNDAY
The penultimate round of the Metro's unique aQuellé Ocean Racing Series takes place this Sunday morning at Hobie Beach. Round 9 for Season 10 of the popular Ocean Series is expected to draw large crowds as participants take part in 6 simultaneously run events on PE's premier beach from 9am.
"It's been another great season of growth for the Series and it's hard to believe that we're already headed towards the end of Season 10" said Mike Zoetmulder of Zsports Events NPC, a non profit events company responsible for the Series. "We're now at the business end of the Series and the competitive ones are eyeing out the overall Series titles whilst the social participants are starting to think about what they'll be doing in the winter to keep fit till the Series returns in October."
This years surprise has been the domination of the 1km ocean swim by Series newcomer 16 year old Framesby high scholar Brigitte Muller, who has won all the ladies 1km ocean swim races this Series whilst on the beach, 15 year old Dylan Finlay has dominated the 5km Beach Run to remain undefeated this season. Equally impressive has been the performance of 13 year old Megan Snyman who has won the ladies 5km Beach Run no fewer than 5 times this season.
Expect tough racing in the swims this Sunday as the Jones siblings try to secure the overall titles for both the 1km and 3km events. Wayne Jones has all but wrapped up the 1km title this year with 5 wins from 6 races whilst younger brother and recent SPAR River Mile Champion and Jendamark Bellbuoy Challenge runner up, Daniel, is wanting to take out the 3km Series title.
A titanic struggle is taking place in the ladies 3km with Rebecca Newman currently leading from Kirsten Marriott, who with 3 wins under the belt, may prove too strong in the end and secure the title.
"Participants have just two more chances to accumulate points for the overall standings and stand a chance of being on the winners podium at the aQuellé final Series prize giving ceremony on Sunday 15th March at News Cafe," added Zoetmulder.
The Series, Africa's largest family beach event, is open to everyone with late entries from 7.30am on race day for either the 1km or 3km Ocean Swim, 5km Beach Run, 5km Beach Walk, 4km SUP or the Kids 12 years and under 1km Beach Run/walk. Races all start from 9am with prize giving on the beach from 10am for the kids and 10.15am for the adults. See www.oceanracingseries.com for further information.
