PUBLIC INVITED TO VIEW RECONDITIONED CAMPANILE BELLS

The bells will remain on display for public viewing at the Tramways during working hours until further notice.

It has been little more than 10 weeks since the first of the 23 bells from the Campanile were lowered to make way for the restoration of this iconic tourist attraction, the bells are ready ring once again. The 23 bells weigh an estimated 17 tons in total, with the biggest weighing nearly 5 tons are now stationed at the Tramways before they make their journey to the Campanile.

The Mandela Bay Development Agency has decide to display the bells at the Tramways building whilst restoration of the Campanile is in progress. “We’re doing this to give the public of Nelson Mandela Bay an opportunity to view and marvel at the history and heritage inscribed on these bells. The bells carry a significant chapter in the history and development of Port Elizabeth” says MBDA Spokesperson Luvuyo Bangazi.

Members of the public attending the Valley Market on Saturday the 2nd of July will be the first to see these iconic structures up close.
