Road closures for ISUZU Ironman African Championship 2026
Road closures will be in effect across Nelson Mandela Bay on 18 and 19 April 2026 to accommodate the ISUZU Ironman African Championship weekend, which includes the Corporate Triathlon Challenge and 5150 on Saturday and the main Ironman event on Sunday.
Residents are advised to take note of temporary road closures in parts of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, which will be in effect to accommodate the race and ensure the safety of both athletes and spectators.
Event dates:
Saturday 18 April 2026: ISUZU Corporate Triathlon Challenge (CTC) and ISUZU 5150
Beach Road/ Marine Drive between Driftsands Drive and Noordhoek Camp Site impacted between 05:00 and 12:00.
Full road closure on Marine Drive between Second Avenue and Noordhoek Camp site
- Access Cape Recife/ Pine Lodge/ SANCOBB via NMU campus Marine Drive Gate
- Access Something Good/ Summerstrand Lifesaving Club via the 8th Avenue cross over. Partial road closure on Marine Drive/ Beach Drive between Second Avenue and Driftsands Drive.
- City bound lanes are open.
- Summerstrand bound lanes are closed.
- Access Schoenmakerskop, Willows and Noordhoek via Walmer and Victoria Drive.
Note that the promenade between Hobie Beach and Kings Beach will serve as the CTC/5150 run course.
Sunday 19 April 2026: ISUZU Ironman South Africa African Championship
Summerstrand and Humewood: The Humewood and Summerstrand beach front roads Marine Drive, Beach Road, Humewood Road: All lanes closed to traffic from Admiralty way to the M4 / Walmer Boulevard from 05:00 to midnight.
- Humerail Spar / Perrott Avenue accessible via Forest Hill Drive / Mitchell Street.
- Driftsands Drive city bound lane will be closed (direction M4) from 05:00 to midnight
- Beach Road apartment buildings in Humewood; one directional access for residents from La Roche Drive to Ocean Road.
- King’s Close and Brookes Hill Road accessible via La Roche Drive behind the Garden Court.
- Lodge Road and Boardwalk Road accessible via the Boardwalk Mall back premises from Second Avenue (McDonald’s).
- Second Avenue closed from Marine Drive to Skegness Avenue.
- Kings Beach, Hobie Beach, Pollock Beach and Pipe Beach parking areas are closed to vehicular traffic.
South End, Walmer and Mt Pleasant:
Walmer Boulevard/Heugh Road/Buffelsfontein from M4 to Mount Pleasant: All roads connecting along Walmer Boulevard, Heugh Road and Buffelsfontein Road will be closed from 05:00-17:00 with cross-over points at the following intersections:
- Forest Hill Drive traffic may access Walmer Blvd, turn right and head towards the harbour / M4 Highway.
- 1st Avenue Walmer left turn onto Walmer Blvd, turning right into Forest Hill Drive or continuing to the M4 / Settlers Highway.
- 3rd Avenue Walmer left turn onto Walmer Blvd, turning right into Forest Hill Drive or continuing to the M4 / Settlers Highway.
- 6th Avenue Walmer
- 9th Avenue Walmer
- 10th Avenue Walmer
- Swift Avenue/ Sasol Garage
- 17th Avenue Walmer
- Walter Road
- Melsetter Road
- Saddlewood Villas into Hilltop
Seaview Road, from Mt Pleasant to Bushy Park:
Full Road closure between 05:00 and 16:45 with the following concessions:
- Milkwood Lane residents may exit up to 07:15 via Link Road and return after 16:30.
- Deer Park and Bushy Park residents may exit up to 07:15 via Old Seaview lower road and return after 16:30.
- Note: Kini Bay and Seaview residents are not affected if travelling via Colleen Glen.
Heron Road and Sardinia Bay Road (Grass Roof and Sardinia Bay Golf Estate):
Full Road closure between 05:00 and 16:45 with the following concessions:
- Grass Roof accessible via Link Road/Old Seaview Road. Patrons must park in Link Road and walk across Seaview Road to Grass Roof at the controlled pedestrian crossing.
- Sardinia Bay Golf Estate Vehicles may leave up to 07:15 and must travel via Heron Road to Seaview Road and cross into Link to exit in the direction of Kragga Kamma/Lorraine and return after 16:30.
- Sardinia Bay Road residents may exit left into Heron Road until 07:15. Use Link Road to Old Seaview Road, then Welcome Avenue to reach Lorraine or Kragga Kamma. Return after 16:30 via Link Road.
Victoria Drive, Schoenmakerskop, The Willows Resort up to NMU:
Full Road Closure from 05:00 – 17:00 with the following concessions:
- Guests, staff and residents of Schoenmakerskop Village and the Willow Resorts may leave their premises and travel in the direction of NMU, exiting via the back gate until 08:00.
- The Willows Resorts guests, Traffic Controlled convoy departing from Victoria Drive/Glendore Road intersection to The Willows at 14:00
- The Willows Resorts guests, Traffic Controlled convoy departing from The Willows at 14:15 along Marine Drive to exit at NMU back gate.
Pine Lodge, Cape Recife Reserve and SANCOBB: Access Cape Recife, Pine Lodge and SANCOBB in road verge lane parallel to Marine Drive between NMU Marine Drive Gate and Pine Lodge Road between 05:00 and midnight. Enter NMU campus from University Way or Strandfontein Road.
